Site details


Site description: A low-lying flood-plain of the Tisza, Szamos and Túr rivers, situated between Vásárosnamény and the border with Ukraine.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important site for breeding waterbirds, raptors and forest birds. Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca (10-15 pairs).

Threats


Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: The main threats to the grasslands are abandonment of management practices, invasion by Amorpha fruticosa, and conversion to arable land or forest. Approximately one third of Crex crex habitat within the IBA is threatened by the construction of Motorway 3.
