Site details
Site description: It is located northeast of the department of Cochabamba, Ayopaya province. This area is completely uninhabited and, therefore, well preserved. Most of the area is covered by dense vegetation known as Yungas, where some species such as Baccharis spp., Satureja boliviana, Barnadesia spp. and Puya spp. dominate (Fjeldså et al. 1999). The site is entirely dedicated to biodiversity conservation and, apart from the activities carried out by SERNAP, no other conservation projects are known to be underway in this area.
Se encuentra al noreste del departamento de Cochabamba, provincia Ayopaya. Esta zona está completamente deshabitada y, por lo tanto, bien conservada. La mayor parte del área está cubierta por una densa vegetación conocida como Yungas, donde dominan algunas especies como Baccharis spp., Satureja boliviana, Barnadesia spp. y Puya spp. (Fjeldså et al. 1999). El sitio se encuentra destinado totalmente a la conservación de la biodiversidad y, aparte de las actividades llevadas a cabo por el SERNAP, no se tiene conocimiento de ningún otro proyecto de conservación que se esté llevando a cabo en esta zona.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. KBA identified in the CEPF Ecosystem Profile of the Tropical Andes Hotspot (2015). Trigger species: Rhinella quechua A1b, B1, B2; Yunganastes fraudator A1b, A1d, B2
Additional biodiversity: Other species of conservation concern are present in this site, although do not qualify as trigger species either because their ranges are out of date or because the site is small enough not reaching the threshold: Ara militaris, Conothraupis speculigera, Phyllomyias weedeni, Tinamus tao, Tremarctos ornatus.
Other species poorly known that occur in the site are: Hyloscirtus armatus
Manageability of the site: The KBA does not have any current form of management. However, due to the interest of the Departmental Government of Cochabamba on KBAs it is possible in the future to foster its conservation and management.
