Site details
Site description: This site is located north part of the Central mountain range of Colombia. It is a mountainous region with steep slopes, interspersed with narrow alluvial valleys and an enormous biotic diversity. The forests are located in the area characterized by its high diversity of fauna and flora (Cuervo et al. 1999, Cuervo et al. 2001, Delgado and Palacio 2001, Corantioquia 2002, BirdLife International 2019). This site together with the area around is the only area where several range-restricted reptile species co-occur.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The site contains the only known population of the threatened Nocturnal Harlequin Toad (Atelopus nocturnus). Two threatened reptile species (Anadia antioquensis, Lepidoblepharis williamsi) trigger KBA criteria A1b, B1, B2, and a third reptile species (Anolis anoriensis) triggers criterion B2. An additional 10 bird species meet legacy KBA criteria.
Manageability of the site: This KBA was delineated during the IBA identification process in 2008. A manageability rationale is not available.
Delineation rationale: This KBA was delinelinated during the IBA identification process in 2008. The boundary revision captures the full range of Atelopus nocturnus.
