Site details


Site description: This KBA is located on the borders with Peru in the tumbesian - dry forest region (southwest Ecuador). This region is a mosaic of agricultural areas and characteristic vegetation of the tumbesian landscapes as follows: seasonal foothill evergreen forest, lowland deciduous forests and semi-deciduous foothill forests. The altitudinal range goes from 250 to 1190m.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. A globally vulnerable and endemic tumbesian species, Synallaxis tithys meets the KBA criterion (A1b)
Additional biodiversity: Puma concolor and tens of tumbesian endemic and threatened birds that did not meet the KBA criteria, like: Pseudastur occidentalis.
Manageability of the site: More than the 80% of the KBA is a conservation and sustainable use area designated and administrated by the Municipality of Puyango.

Delineation rationale: This KBA cover more native vegetation and records of trigger species. New limits are: on west the borders with Peru. On south the agricultural lands and the road to El Limo. On east and northeast agricultural lands of Las Huacas.
