Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Moyobamba qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets the A1 and B2 criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance accorging to Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. This KBA harbors the threatened species Xanthosoma tarapotense, Plecturocebus oenanthe and three range restricted birds (Herpsilochmus parkeri, Phylloscartes gualaquizae and Zimmerius villarejoi).
Additional biodiversity: Ara militaris (VU), Lanio fulvus, Conopias cinchoneti (VU), Henicorhina leucoptera (NT), Herpsilochmus axillaris (VU), Phylloscartes gualaquizae (NT), Picumnus steindachneri (EN), Tangara argyrofenges (VU), Zimmerius cinereicapilla (VU), Sericossypha albocristata (VU), Thamnophilus tenuepunctatus (VU), Touit stictopterus (NT), Phaethornis koepckeae (NT), Campylopterus villaviscensio (NT), Heliangelis regalis (NT), Herpsilochmus parkeri (VU), Machaeropterus eckelverryi, Zimmerius villarejoi, Urosticte ruficrissa, Ramphastos culminatus, Ramphocelus melanogaster, Zimmerius viridiflavus, Urostricte ruficrissa.

Delineation rationale: The Moyobamba KBA is delineated to include the trigger species, including agricultural zones due to the ecological characteristics of the species. To the northwest, it follows the banks of the Tomchima River from the district of Posic, excluding agricultural zones and the city of Soritor. It follows the Jiron Atahualpa to exclude the city of Rioja until it reaches the border with the Alto Mayo Protected Forest Natural Protected Area. To the west it follows the departmental border between Sam Martin and Moyobamba to the town of Alto Peru. To the south, it crosses the Ochique River in the district of Soritor and follows the dirt road that connects the towns of Juan de la Mina, Vista Alegre La Palma, Nuevo Cutervo to the southeast where it borders the Baños Termantes road (100PE). To the east, it excludes the towns of Shucshuyacu, Jepelacio to the northeast where it borders the Mayo River.
