Site details

Site description: The KBA Tambopata covers an area of 5196.944 sq km and it's located in Peru, in the department of Madre de Dios, province of Tambopata (Inambari, Laberinto, and Tambopata districts), and the department of Puno, province of Carabaya (Ayapata district). The altitudinal range of this KBA is 200 - 550 masl. The main climate types in the KBA Tambopata are: 1) warm and very rainy with abundant humidity all seasons of the year; and 2) warm, and rainy with abundant humidity all seasons of the year. In the region, the temperature ranges from 17°C to 31°C and precipitation ranges from 2000 mm to 5000 mm . The KBA Tambopata harbors the following ecosystems: Terrace non-floodable forest "Bosque de Terraza no inundable", Low hill forest "Bosque de Colina baja", Floodable alluvial forest "Bosque aluvial inundable", Palm swamp "Pantano de Palmeras", High hill forest "Bosque de Colina alta", Yungas foothill forest "Bosque basimontano de Yunga", secondary vegetation, mining areas and agricultural areas.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Tambopata qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for A1, B1 and B2 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. This KBA harbors six endemic and geographical restricted odonates (Calvertagrion albatum, Drepanoneura peruviensis, Gynacantha bartai, Leptobasis mauffrayi, Metaleptobasis silvicola, Polythore manua), the endemic and range restricted moth Walkeriella miraculosa, the endemic and range restricted harvestman Protus bolivari, the Endangered plant Cymbopetalum tessmannii, three range restricted bird species (Formicarius rufifrons, Poecilotriccus albifacies, and Agelasticus xanthophthalmus) and the range restricted fish Moema ortegai.
Additional biodiversity: Formicarius rufifrons, Harpia harpyja, Chaetura pelagica, Cnipodecter superrufus, Neomorphus geoffroyi, Primolius couloni, Tinamus tao, Coryphaspiza melanotis, Chaetura pelagica, Poecilotriccus albifacies, Agelasticus xanthophthalmus, Ramphastos culminatus, Touit huetii, Malacoptila semicincta, Eubucco tucinkae, Myrmoborus lophotes, Akletos goeldii, Conioptilon mcilhennyi, Lophotriccus eulophotes, Hoploxypterus cayanus, Charadrius collaris, Sternula superciliaris, Phaetusa simplex, Tigrisoma lineatum, Tigrisoma fasciatum, Cochlearius cochlearius, Zebrilus undulatus, Butorides striata, Ardea cocoi, Pilherodius pileatus, Mesembrinibis cayennensis, Poecilotriccus albifacies, Agelasticus xanthophthalmus, Anhima cornuta, Limosa haemastica, Calidris alba, Actitis macularius, Calidris bairdii, Riparia riparia, Hirundo rustica, Catharus ustulatus, Piranga rubra, Apistogramma urteagai, Moema rubrocaudata, Pristimantis divnae, Moema kenwoodi
Manageability of the site: The KBA Tambopata contains the protected natural area of the same name that is maneged by the National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State - SERNANP, as well as some part of its buffer zone. In addition, fifteen Private Conservation Areas are within the KBA. Therefore, it can be managed by the SERNANP in coordination with the Regional Government of Madre de Dios (https://www.gob.pe/regionmadrededios) and "Servicio Nacional Forestal de Fauna Silvestre" (SERFOR, https://www.gob.pe/serfor). The National Coordination Group of KBAs has a conservation promotion and monitoring committee, which is composed of various governmental and civil society institutions that will work to promote conservation actions in the KBAs.

Other site values: The Ese'ejas of the native communities of Infierno and Palma Real make the area of the Tambopata National Reserve. Source: SERNANP (2011). Plan Maestro de la Reserva Nacional Tambopata, 2011 - 2016. https://sis.sernanp.gob.pe/biblioteca/?publicacion=395
Delineation rationale: The Tambopata KBA area was expanded to include the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve including the Infiernillo Conservation Concession and the town of Chonta. Several of the trigger species are birds and may use the patches of forest between agricultural areas.
