Site description: The KBA Coto de Caza El Angolo covers an area of 946.57 sq km and it's located within Perú, in the department of Piura, provinces of Sullana and Talara. The altitude range of the KBA is 160 a 1520 masl. The climate types present in the KBA are warm and dry, with seasonal rainfall from January to March, with two distinct seasons, a dry season (May to November) and a rainy season (December to April). Annual precipitation in the area fluctuates from 100 mm in very dry years to considerably more than 3000 mm in years when an El Niño event occurs. El Angolo Game Preserve is located in the biogeographic province of the Equatorial Dry Forest (biogeographic classification proposed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (Udvardy, 1975) and CDC (Rodriguez, 1996) and the ecoregion of the dry forests of Tumbes and Piura according to the classification used for planning at an ecoregional scale (Dinerstein et al., 1995). The predominant habitats in El Angolo are tropical deciduous forest, gallery forest and riparian scrub. In the lower elevations of the area, the dominant tree species are Prosopis pallida, Caesalpinia paipai, Capparis scabrida and Loxopterigium huasango. It includes Ipomoea carnea and Cordia lutea shrubs, and the cacti C. macrostibas and Neoraimondia sp. Above 650 m, the dominant trees are Cochlospermum vitifolium, Bursera graveolens and Erythrina smithiana. The shrub composition includes Mimosa myriadena, Mimosa acantholoba and Byttneria glabrescens. Above 700-750 m, on the foothills, the most notable trees are Eriotheca ruizii, Eriotheca discolor, Geoffroea striata and Terminalia valverdae. The two species of Eriotheca are usually covered by Tillandsia usneoides or other epiphytes of the same genus. The ravines (600-900 m) also include Ficus padifolia, Styrax tarapotensis Celtis iguanea, Cestrum auriculatum, Acnistus arborescens, Muntingia calabura and Acacia macracantha. In higher and more humid areas, the dominant species are Myrcianthes discolor, Styrax tarapotensis, Psidium guajaba, Capparis prisca and Fulcaldea laurifolia. The KBA has a direct use zone, a wilderness zone and a special use zone for tourism and recreation, the main study of birds was conducted by Javier Barrios and collaborators (2015).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Coto de Caza El Angolo qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for A1b and B2 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBA. This KBA harbors the Vulnerable Myiarchus semirufus and the range restricted Ochthoeca salvini, Leptotila ochraceiventris and Lathrotriccus griseipectus.

Manageability of the site: Since this KBA enclosures the Coto de Caza El Angolo, it can be potentially manageable by the National Service of Protected Natural Areas - SERNANP.
