Site details
Site description: The KBA Reserva Nacional Pampa Galeras - Bárbara d'Achille and Buffer Zone covers an area of 224.79 sq km and it's located in Peru, in the province of Lucanas, department of Ayacucho. This KBA has an altitudinal range of 3670-4293 masl. The main climate types in this KBA are: (1) Semifrigid and with dry winter, (2) cold and dry winter. In the former, the maximum temperature ranges between 11°C and 15°C; the minimum temperature, between -11°C and -7°C; and the annual precipitation, between 500 mm and 700 mm. In the second, the maximum temperature ranges between 13°C and 17°C; the minimum temperature, between -7°C and 5°C; and the annual precipitation, between 200 mm and 700 mm. The KBA Reserva Nacional Pampa Galeras - Bárbara d'Achille and Buffer Zone includes the following ecosystems: Pajonal de puna seca (Páramo of Dry Puna) and Bosque relicto mesoandino (Relict Mesoandean Forest).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for A1a, A1e and B1 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBA. This KBA harbors the entire known population of the endemic Endangered frog Telmatobius intermedius.
