Site details
Site description: The KBA Cutervo National Park and surrounding areas covers and area of 301.65 sq km and it's located in the department of Cajamarca, in the province of Cutervo (San Andres de Cutervo, Santo Domingo de la Capilla, Santo Tomas, Santa Cruz, Cutervo, Socota, Pimpingos, and Callayuc districts). This KBA includes the Cutervo National Park. The types of weather in the KBA are: (1) temperate and rainy with dry autumn and winter, and (2) temperate and semi-dry with abundant humidity all seasons. In the former, the maximum temperature ranges from 19°C to 23°C, while the minimum temperature, from 3°C to 7°C. Annual precipitation varies between 700 mm and 1500 mm. In the second, the maximum temperature varies between 21°C and 25°C; the minimum temperature, between 7°C and 11°C; and the annual precipitation, between 700 mm and 2000 mm. This KBA includes the following ecosystems: "agriculture zone", "Bosque relicto montano de vertiente occidental (Western slope montane relict forest)", "matorral andino (Andean shrubland)" and urban areas.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Cutervo National Park and surrounding areas qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for A1, B1 and B2 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBA. This KBA harbors two threatened frog species (Atelopus pachydermus and Telmatobius latirostris), two range restricted bird species (Penelope barbata and Heliangelus micraster), the endemic and geographically restricted harvestmen Ayacucho spielbergi and the endangered plant Brunellia brunnea.
Additional biodiversity: Coeligena iris, Thlypopsis inornata, Arremon nigriceps and Sphenopsis piurae, Atelopus pachydermus.
Manageability of the site: The KBA includes Cutervo National Park. Thus, it can be potentially managed by the managers of the National Park jointly with the National Service of Protected Natural Areas - SERNANP (https://www.gob.pe/sernanp), the National Forest and Wildlife Service - SERFOR (https://www.gob.pe/serfor), and the Cajamarca Regional Government (https://www.regioncajamarca.gob.pe/).

Delineation rationale: The limits of the Cutervo KBA and its surroundings coincide with the limits of the Cutervo National Park buffer zone. This KBA also includes Cutervo National Park. To the southwest, it extends along the Santa Cruz River and Highway 5N in the Cutervo province to the border of the Santo Domigo de Capilla district.
