Site details


Site description: The upper reaches of the Rivers Cherek Balkarski, Cherek Bizengiyski, and Chegem, with forests and meadows (mainly high mountain zones; several 5,000-m peaks in the Bokovoy range) in a rugged landscape with deep ravines, etc.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: Based on data published in the previous European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989), the site is important for Tetrao mlokosiewiczi. Other breeding species include Tetraogallus sp. and Alectoris chukar.
Delineation rationale: 2009-08-17: IBA area changed from 100,100 ha to 107,500 ha (by BL Secretariat, following RBCU spreadsheet of changes that need making). 2014-08-12 (BL Secretariat): centroid coords adjusted to 43°3'47'N 43°14'9'E and site area changed to (or confirmed as) 107500 ha (rounded), on basis of refined polygon downloaded from Spatial Database on Important Bird Areas of Russia 2014 (© Russian Bird Conservation Union, © Transparent World).
