Site details
Site description: Yururi islet and Moyururi islet are uninhabited islets off Nemuro Peninsula. Yururi islet is 168.88 ha and Moyururi islet is 31 ha. Both islets appear to be around 40 m high round islets with cliffs. The cliffs are breeding sites for northern seabirds. The center of Yurui island has high moor vegetation, and marine vegetation and alpine plants are on the edge of the islet because pastured horses prevent an overgrowth of Bamboo grass. On the contrary, Moyururi islet is covered with Sasa veitchii var. because there are no large grass-eating mammals. The islands are closed to the public.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
