Site details
Site description: Lake Asahiike in Niigata Prefecture is the largest lagoon among six lagoons scattered at northern Kubiki Plain, and the total area is about 79 ha. On the northwestern side of the lagoon, reed beds are found, and Nuphar japonicum, Trapa japonica and Brasenia schreberi grow in the lagoon. Unoike, neighboring the western side of Asahiike is a lagoon of 49ha, and Nelumbo nucifera cover the entire surface of the lake. Unoike's shape is like a peninsula jutting out into the lagoon, and the northwestern side is a city park.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
