Site description: Osaka Nanko Bird Sanctuary is located at the reclaimed land of Osaka Nanko in the inner part of Osaka Bay. There are fishing grounds, waterways, harbor facilities, business areas and residential areas around the site. The Sanctuary's wetland area that consists of an artificial tidal land and salt marsh play an important role as a stopover for shorebirds in the Osaka Bay.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
