Site details

Site description: The site is a dammed lake of about 200 ha created in the mainstream of the Totsukawa river in Kii Mountains. Rich secondary forests of the Fagaceae Castanopsis and Fagaceae Querus grow on surrounding slope around the lake, and the branches spread out over its surface, producing good feeding and hiding grounds for a large number of wintering Mandarin Ducks.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
