Site details
Site description: Northern taiga with a large number of lakes and marshes, including Lakes Keret, Eng, Nizhneye, Kum, and the south-eastern part of Lake Top. The boundaries of the most important wetlands need to be determined.It is very possible that aftre special field researches several IBAs should be identifyed at this huge area.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: Based on data in the previous European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989), this is an important breeding site for two wildfowl species, and an important staging site for migrating ducks.
Delineation rationale: 2009-08-19 (BL Secretariat): IBA area changed from 1,000,000 ha to 744,700 ha (following RBCU spreadsheet of changes that need making). 2014-08-12 (BL Secretariat): centroid coords adjusted to 65°40'15'N 32°51'10'E and site area changed to (or confirmed as) 744700 ha (rounded), on basis of refined polygon downloaded from Spatial Database on Important Bird Areas of Russia 2014 (© Russian Bird Conservation Union, © Transparent World).
