Site details


Site description: The Mogamigawa river that runs in the northwest of Yamagata Prefecture is one of the three main rapid streams in Japan. The Mogamigawa estuary is a wintering ground for some 10,000 swans. Besides the swans, wild ducks and sea gulls also visit this area. Peregrine Falcons and Goshawks/Northern Goshawks visit here to hunt for the waterfowl.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
