Site details
Site description: The IBA comprises wetlands along the Yalu Jiang river, including a reservoir formed by a dam at Laguxiao, upstream of the confluence of the Changdian He river and the Yalu Jiang. There is extensive open water which does not freeze in winter, and the area is on the border with North Korea so human disturbance is low. Waterbirds winter in the IBA, and local people have reported that Crested Ibis Nipponia nippon and Crested Shelduck Tadorna cristata were present in the past.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: The wetlands support Soft-shelled Turtle and Northern Salamander. Mammals include Red Fox, Raccoon Dog, Asiatic Black Bear and Chinese River Deer.
Delineation rationale: New polygon digitized by Tris Allinson at Birdlife International using Google Earth, however accuracy remains difficult to determine
