Site details
Site description: Located in Sanmenxia City, north-west Henan Province. In winter, when the reservoir is storing water, it may extend for 100 km in length and be 5 km wide and the water can be up to 324 m in depth. In summer and autumn, when the water is released from the reservoir, it has a maximum width of 4 km and the shallow areas will be exposed.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
