Site details


Site description: Meihua Shan is a forested area in western Fujian, at an average elevation of 900 m and with over 40 peaks above 1,000 m. The nature reserve extends 20 km from east to west and 19 km from north to south. Forest cover is 60%, and the main vegetation types are subtropical broadleaf evergreen forest, mixed coniferous forest and bamboo stands and scrub.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected plants include Tsuga longlbracteata, Fokienia hodginsii and Bretschneidera sinensis. Animals include Macaca mulatta,Manis pentadactyla, Lutra lutra, Viverricula indica, Viverra zibetha, Neofelis nebulosa, Panthera pardus, Cervus nippon, Selenarctos thibetanus and Capricornis sumatraensis. There were records of Panthera tigris amoyensis in the 1950s.
