Site details

Site description: The area is located close to the coast, between Barumun river and the estuary of Rokan river near Bagansiapiapi.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas) KBA identified in the CI/CEPF Conservation Outcomes poster for Sumatra [Sundaland Hotspot] (2007). Taxonomy, nomenclature and threat status follow the 2004 IUCN Red List.
Additional biodiversity: Bird diversity in the area is not yet assessed through intensive study, only some rapid observations by A. Elliot and I. Martinez (look at Holmes 1996). Probability the Spot-billed Pelican Pelecanus philippensis breed in this site at Daun River. This bird maybe extinct in South-east Asia. The survey also found Lesser Adjutant Leptoptilus javanicus, described as common bird at the estuary of Rokan River, of which the population is under serious threat from hunting. The other survey by van Balen (1991) reported the existence of some important bird species such Storm's Stork Ciconia stormi, Large Green-Pigeon Treron capellei and probably Spotted Wood-owl Strix seluputo which need to reconfirmed. This area is probably important for mangrove specialist bird species.
