Site details


Site description: Located on the southern coast of Java around 60 km south-west of Banyuwangi.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: Bos javanicus, Cuon alpinus, Panthera pardus, Panthera tigris sondaica (probably has extinct), Sus verrucosus, Trachypithecus auratus, Caretta caretta, Chelonia mydas, Dermochelys coriacea, Eretmochelys imbricata, Lepidochelys olivacea (Seidensticker & Suyono 1980, MacKinnon et.al.1982, Hedges &Tyson 1996, Whitten et.al.1996, Nijman 1997). And the important flora in Meru Betiri include Balanophora fungosa, Rafflesia zollingeriana and Tetrastigma spp. (only in Meru Betiri hills) (Seidesticker & Suyono 1980).

Habitats


Summary of habitats in KBA: Lowland rainforest and lower mountain forest are the important habitat of this area. Beach vegetation dominated by mangrove (only in gulf and estuary, like Sukamande and Permisan). Small swamp forest located behind the mangrove forest of Sukamande Permisan and Magelan. Other vegetation types of this area are Teak plantation, coarse grassland, banana garden (at Teluk Bandilit) and grassland. This area has lowland forest, lowland swamp forest and beach formation (Seidensticker & Suyono 1980, MacKinnon et.al.1982, Whitten et.al.1996)

Threats


Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Unresolved future of the enclave, rubber plantation, rattan collection (northwestern of the reserve), turtle egg collection, crop encroachment, forest cutting and wildlife hunting (MacKinnon et.al.1982).
