Site details


Site description: Located 124 km east of Jember in the driest part of Java, Baluran has the peak and caldera of Baluran Mountain which linked with Ijen area, 35 km sout-hest. There are some small islands on the east coast between Air Karang and Tanjung Candibang, and the north part there is a rocky formation between Gatal and Bilik
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: Bos javanicus, Cuon alpinus, Panthera pardus and Trachypithecus auratus (Nijman 1997, Hedges & Tyson 1996, Whitten et.al.1996). Erythrina cuodophylla is the endemic flora of Java (MacKinnon et.al.1982).
