Site details


Site description: This area is located between Balikpapan and Samarinda and has been damaged by forest fire. Beside that, exotic species introduction and conversion for agriculture, mainly pepper, present in this area. There is Orang Utan Rehabilitation Research Centre in Wanariset. Although the area have low conservation value, but it has been reported that important species from Wanariset and Wain River are present (see Holmes 1997), including some common species that usually unrecord at low altitude.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: The vulnerable Crestless Fireback Lophura erythropthalma recorded on this site. Other species possibly live in this site (Holmes 1997) are Bornean Bristlehead Pityriasis gymnocephala, Striped Wren-babbler Kenopia striata, White-bellied Yuhinia Yuhinia zantholeuca, Verditer Flycatcher Eumyias thalassina and Bornean Blue-flycatcher Cyornis superbus.

Habitats


Summary of habitats in KBA: It very difficult to calculate habitat proportion in this area, but the main habitat is lowland evergreen forest, and there is logging area with secondary forest, damaged area by forest fire, agriculture, and probably mangrove forest along of Wain River.This area is used for nature conservation, watershed management, forest research centre, orang utan rehabilitation, wood industry, agriculture and peppers plantation.
