Site details
Site description: This area consists of slopes and flat ridges which are formed by volcanic activity. There is a crater lake in the active mountain of Wae Sano.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. KBA identified by the 2014 CEPF Wallacea Ecosystem Profile process. Taxonomy and threat status follow the 2013 IUCN Red List.
Additional biodiversity: There are two endemic birds of Flores in this area. Flores Monarch Monarcha sacerdotum and Flores Crow Corvus florensis (Trainor & Lesmana 2000). In 1970s, Yellow-crested Cockatoo was reported abundant, but there is no new record and it is predicted extinct from this area (Schmutz 1977).
Delineation rationale: 2015-06-10 (BL Secretariat): site area changed from 5500 ha to 6569 ha, following 2014 CEPF Ecosystem Profile.
