Site details
Site description: This area is the bigest forest, with dense canopy cover. Gunung Wanggameti (1225 m) is the highest elevation in Sumba dan supporting all slope terestrial forest types from sea level until mountain peak (Jepson et.al. 1996). The high plant diversity can be found from 800 m elevation. Because there is complete elevation range, so that this area is appropriate for animals seasonal migration (Jones et.al. 1992). Moss forest in this area, covered Gunung Wanggameti from the 850 m elevation (Banilodu & Saka 1993). East and north part of this area border on garden and field, at south part border on savana and forest, and at west part on border on field and villages (Sub Balai Tata Hutan Kupang 1985)
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. KBA identified by the 2014 CEPF Wallacea Ecosystem Profile process. Taxonomy and threat status follow the 2013 IUCN Red List.
Additional biodiversity: This area as a biggest population site of Red-naped Fruit-dove Ptilinopus dohertyi and Sumba Green Pigeon Treron teysmannii (Jepson et.al. 1996).
Delineation rationale: 2015-06-10 (BL Secretariat): site area changed from 47014 ha to 50004 ha, following 2014 CEPF Ecosystem Profile.
