Site details
Site description: Topography Obi Island is hilly. Moro ethnic is the indigenous people in this area and they are living in small clusters. They collected food, medicinal plants and hunting. Some of Moro communities have moved to the coastal area and interacted with the outside. Main comodity of coastal people are cacao and coconut (for copra).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. KBA identified by the 2014 CEPF Wallacea Ecosystem Profile process. Taxonomy and threat status follow the 2013 IUCN Red List.
Additional biodiversity: Carunculated Fruit-dove Ptilinopus granulifrons only lives in this island, recorded in Jikotomo (northern part outside this area) (Linsey 1995). Non-bird biodiversity: Phalanger rothschildi (the endemic cuscus of Obi Island), two species of rats and butterfly Ornithoptera aesacus (BirdLife International 2001).
Delineation rationale: 2015-06-10 (BL Secretariat): site area changed from 45000 ha to 75558 ha, following 2014 CEPF Ecosystem Profile.
