Site details
Site description: Ridges up to 300 m, steep shore and flat only on the northwestern part. The flat area alreday cleared since 1970 for garden to grow bananas, pineaples, coconuts and batatas by fisherman from Kepulauan Banda and Tayando whose come periodically. They catch fishes from Manuk island and use this island to dry the fishes to make salty fish which then they sell it in Ambon Naira (a town in Banda islands).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard. KBA identified by the 2014 CEPF Wallacea Ecosystem Profile process. Taxonomy and threat status follow the 2013 IUCN Red List.
Additional biodiversity: This island probably has the biggest seabides breeding site colonies in Banda Sea (MacKinnon & Artha 1981). This area supports Bridled Tern Sterna anaethetus, Brown Booby Sula leucogaster, White-tailed Tropicbird Phaeton lepturus, Red-tailed Tropicbird Phaeton rubricauda, Brown Noddy Anous stolidus, Great Frigatebird Fregata minor, Lesser Frigatebird Fregata ariel, Red-footed Booby Sula sula, Masked Booby Sula dactylatra (de Korte 1991). The restricted-range bird Pink-headed Imperial Pigeon Ducula rosacea also lives in this area (White & Bruce 1986, de Korte 1991).
Delineation rationale: 2015-06-10 (BL Secretariat): site area changed from 200 ha to 493 ha, following 2014 CEPF Ecosystem Profile.
