Site details
Site description: Coastal zone and hills used by the community for dryland agriculture area which is passed on from generation to generation. Land use is managed using traditional law, which also valid for marine resources. Most of the people work as dry land farmer, and also fisherman. Main comodities are coconut, clove, coffee, nutmeg and marine products.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. Alliance for Zero Extinction (2018): site confirmed as an AZE site during the AZE project (2015-2018). Taxonomy, nomenclature and Red List category follow the IUCN 2016 Red List.
Additional biodiversity: Little Kai White-eye Zosterops uropygialis only found in Kai Besar Island. Non-bird biodiversity: The important fauna in Kai Besar Island is Thylogale brunii graciis that only lives on forested area.
Delineation rationale: 2015-06-10 (BL Secretariat): site area changed from 14,218 ha (2004 IBA) to 28,623 ha (2014 KBA), following 2014 CEPF Ecosystem Profile.
