Site details
Site description: Most of the area is covered by forests, predominantly spruce, with some enclaves of beech or primeval mixed fir-beech forests (for example in ofínský prales or in Hojná Voda). The treeless areas are mainly former settlements abandoned and destroyed after the displacement of German inhabitants in 1945. Thanks to the isolation and inaccessibility of the area in the border zone and also thanks to reasonable forestry management and non-intensive farming important habitats of rare and threatened bird species were not only well preserved, but also some new ones came into being.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
