Site details

Site description: Complex site on the Baltic coast, comprising two large wetlands, both formerly separate IBAs: the shallow coastal lagoon lake Pape and the Nida raised bog (IBA boundary transformations shown in Fig. 5-1). Surrounding forests and meadows, disperse human settlements as well as a 25 km stretch of the sea shore are included. Lake Pape was included in the first European IBA inventory [4], and along with Nida bog IBA was listed in the subsequent international and national site lists [5, 6, 1]. Fully protected: there is a 99.9% overlap with Pape nature park, a candidate SPA.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
