Site details

Site description: An area of coastal habitats (seashore, dunes, pine forest) with mosaic of wet forest and fen habitats, including significant occurrence of Erica tetralix and Myrica gale. First listed as an IBA in 1994 [1] but due to limited criteria application possibilities the site was not included in further inventories. The site now qualifies under the IBA C criteria. Almost fully protected: there is a 98.3% overlap with Ziemupe restricted nature reserve, a candidate SPA.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
