Site details

Site description: Predominantly a forest and wetland complex on the Baltic Sea Irbe strait coast, encompassing shore and dune habitats as well as the natural system of parallel ancient forested dunes interspersed with narrow strips of fens or mires. Part of the IBA was first listed in 1994 [1], now also qualifies under the IBA C criteria. Almost fully protected: there is a 98.6% overlap with Ovisi restricted nature reserve, a candidate SPA.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
