Site details
Site description: New IBA that combines three former IBAs: Lielais Kemeru bog (a large raised bog with numerous small lakes, surrounded by mixed forests), Lake Kanieris (a shallow coastal freshwater lake, rich in emergent vegetation) and Kalnciems meadows and Odini fields. Large and uniquely diverse area with high forest cover (54%). Two of the original IBAs were included in the first European IBA inventory [4], joined by the third one in subsequent site lists [5, 6, 1]. Fully protected: there is a 100% overlap with Kemeri national park and the newly designated Kalnciems meadows restricted nature reserve, both candidate SPA.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
