Site details


Site description: Open agricultural area integrated in a zone with soft slopes and located in the south of Reguengos de Monsaraz. It is used for cultivation of cereals and also for viticulture and oliveculture.Western area contains a part of Herdade do Esporão and wetlands where is included lagoon with water-fringe vegetation and in broken stone.Eastern area is dominated by old olive-groves, arable lands and fallow lands. There are some woodland of evergreen Oak (Quercus ilex and Quercus suber).Fallow land is used for grazing sheep and cattle.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: River Caridade in arrival at Esporão dam is an important wetland for birds, especially for breeding nucleus of Netta rufina,himantopus himantopus,Gelochelidon nilotica and Anas strepera. Eastern area has zones with high value for breeding and food for species of steppic habitats, Glareola pratincola and Pterocles orientalis.In the North there are old olives-groves also important for breeding wide species.

Threats


Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Currently, the habitats are maintened by tradicional agriculture, but the weakness of the rural economy and the proximity to influenced area of Alqueva Project may lead farmers to change land-uses.In the eastern area , illegal abatements and cynegetic practices are a high disturbance, and in the western area there is an expansion of viticulture that will affect to landscape and quality water in the wetland.Some wetland have a soft disturbance due to controlled access and dificult accessibility.
