Site details


Site description: The Miguel Domingo Fuerte Natural Monument occupies an area of ​​33 km2 in the municipality of Paraíso in the province of Barahona, near the city of Barahona. It is considered one of the most important areas for the conservation of biodiversity and water resources in the Dominican Republic. The highest mountain within the wildlife refuge is Loma Pie de Palo, reaching 1527m asl. Climatically it is very varied, ranging from dry to very humid, depending on the altitude. Precipitation ranges from 400 to 4000 millimeters, with an average annual temperature between 15° and 20°C. The habitat consists predominantly of primary and secondary forest.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The amphibian Eleutherodactylus rufifemoralis meets A1a and B1, the Hispaniolan Amazon (Amazona ventralis) meets A1d and Geotrygon caniceps meets A1a.
