Site details

Site description: A large raised bog with some small lakes, surrounded by predominantly coniferous forests (mainly spruce Picea with some pine Pinus).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The site is important for mire-breeding species including Tetrao tetrix (with more than 50 displaying males, the largest concentration in Lithuania) and Pluvialis apricaria (min. 7 pairs), and supports large numbers of Grus grus on passage (up to 200 birds in autumn migration, 1995-1996).
