Site details


Site description: This unnamed island is a small vegetated sand and rock island half way between the north-east tip of Groote Eylandt and the larger offshore north-east islands (Chatto 2001 island ref S048). The whole of Groote Eylandt and its seas, including this IBA, are within the Anindilyakwa Indigenous Protected Area.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: Chatto (2001) made three counts during the Roseate Tern breeding season and recorded an average of 'low thousands' of this species. Up to 500 Bridled Terns were also recorded nesting and up to 20 Black-naped Terns. Non-bird biodiversity: Marine turtles nest on the island.
Other site values: Arnhem Land ALT. Traditionally-owned land.
