Site details


Site description: The KBA is located in the Beni department, Mamoré province, in the municipalities of San Ramón and San Joaquin. The region is home to flooded and wooded savannahs, forest islands, terra firma forests and gallery forests that surround lakes, rivers and streams. These ecosystems have allowed the development of an enormous wealth of flora and fauna that includes several threatened species, such as the buffalo (Inia boliviensis) or the swamp deer (Blastocerus dichotomus).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. Trigger species: Ara glaucogularis A1a, A1c, B1; Culicivora caudacuta A1d; Alectrurus tricolor A1d; Coryphaspiza melanotis A1d.
Manageability of the site: The KBA does not have any current form of management. However, due to the interest of the Departmental Government of Beni on KBAs it is possible in the future to foster its conservation and management.
Delineation rationale: The KBA is bordered to the west by the Mamoré River and to the west by the Río Negro and Machupo, to the south it follows the municipal limits, bordering the municipality of San Javier.
