Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Delineation rationale: Hasan Gölü (SitRecID 9636) and Sikke Gölü (SitRecID 9635) were proposed in BirdLife 2001 Ramsar Shadow List publication, but then [presumably] in 2004 were merged together and with a part of Van Gölü [site listed in 1997/2000 IBA inventory] (SitRecID 832; 390,000 ha) to form the new site Van Ovası (SitRecID 24306) in the 2004 IBA book (Kiliç & Eken 2004).
