Site description: The KBA Bosques secos del Marañón covers an area of 2291.016 sq km and it's located within the provinces of Chota, Celendín, San Marcos and Cajabamba in the department of Cajamarca, the provinces of Luya and Chachapoyas in the department of Amazonas and the province of Bolívar in the department of La Libertad. The altitude range of the KBA Bosques secos del Marañón is 750-3750 masl. The main climate types in the KBA Bosques secos del Marañón are: 1) Temperate, rainy with dry winter, 2) Temperate, rainy with dry autumn and winter, 3) Temperate, semi-dry with dry winter, 4) Temperate, semi-dry with abundant humidity all seasons of the year, 5) Temperate, rainy with abundant humidity all seasons of the year, and 6) Cold. Very rainy with abundant humidity all seasons. The temperature ranges from 3°C to 29°C and the annual rainfall ranges from 300 mm to 3000 mm, approximately. The KBA Bosques secos del Marañón presents the following ecosystems: "Matorral andino", "Bosque estacionalmente seco interandino (Marañón, Mantaro, Pampas y Apurímac)", "Vegetación Secundaria", "Zona agrícola", "Bosque altimontano (Pluvial) de Yunga", "Bosque relicto montano de vertiente occidental", "Jalca" and rivers.
The name of this KBA changed from "Río Marañón" to "Bosques secos del Marañón", because it is more representative of the area due to the ecosystems that occur near the Marañón River.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Bosques secos del Marañón qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for A1, B1 and B2 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBA. The KBA Bosques secos del Marañón harbors threatened and range restricted plant species (Cleistocactus longiserpens, Matucana krahnii, Matucana weberbaueri and Browningia altissima), the Critically Endangered Parkinsonia peruviana, the Vulnerable Polylepis multijuga, the Vulnerable frogs Hyloxalus insulatus, two Endangered and range restricted lizards (Phyllodactylus delsolari and Phyllodactylus thompsoni) and nine range restricted bird species.

Manageability of the site: Since this KBA enclosures the Nationally Prioritized Areas ''Hacienda Limón'' and ''Balsas'', Hornopampa Fragile Ecosystem, the "Bosques Tropicales Estacionalmente Secos del Marañón" and the "Bosques Secos del Marañón" Regional Conservation Areas, Regionally Prioritized Area Marañón - Balsas Dry Forest, San Pedro de Chuquibamba Private Conservation Area, the KBA Bosques secos del Marañón can be managed jointly by the National Service of Protected Natural Areas - SERNANP, the National Forest and Wildlife Service - SERFOR and the Regional Government of Cajamarca, Amazonas and La Libertad regions.
