Site details

Site description: The KBA Bellavista covers an area of 331.187 sq km and it's located in the province of Jaén, in the department of Cajamarca, between the Chinchipe and Marañón rivers and the Shumba ravine. This KBA has an altitudinal range from 350 to 1250 masl. It is a low forest area mixed with scrub, within the Marañon dry forest ecoregion and has very little anthropic intervention. It only presents intervention in a small portion, due to the presence of some access roads. The KBA Bellavista is also an IBA.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Bellavista qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for the criteria A1, B1 and B2 described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBA. This KBA harbors at least three threatened plants (Ilex jelskii, Browgningia altissima and Matucana madisoniorum), a vulnerable lizard (Polycrus peruvianus) and five range-restricted birds (Synallaxis maranonica, Thlypopsis inornata, Melanopareia maranonica, Turdus maranonicus and Incaspiza watkinsi).
Additional biodiversity: Birds: Turdus maranonicus,Thaumasius taczanowskii, Thamnophilus bernardi, Nephelomyoas lintoni, Penelope barbata, Andigena hypoglauca, Gallinago imperialis, Gallinago nobilis, Grallaricula peruviana, Asthenes griseomurina, Heliangelus micraster, Metallura odomae, Hapalopsittaca pyrrhops, Heliangelus viola, Lipaugus fuscocinereus, Siptornis striaticollis, Atlapetes pallidinucha, Cnemathraupis eximia, Chalcostigma herrani, Cinnycerthia uniruda, Coeligena iris, Coeligena lutetiae, Cyanolyca turcosa, Diglossa humeralis, Diglossa lafresnayii, Eriocnemis vestita, Grallaria hypoleuca, Grallaria nuchalis, Pseudospingus verticalis, Iridosornis rufivertex, Saltator cinctus, Thripadectes flammulatus, Turdus fulviventris, Pionus tumultuosus, Synallaxis azarae. Plants: Espostoa blossfeldiorum, Espostoa superba, Monvillea jaenensis, Pereskia horrida, Rauhocereus riosaniensis subsp. jaenensis.
Manageability of the site: This site could be managed as a private conservation area because it is home to endangered species.
Supersedes another site: The name os this KBA has been changed from "Chinchipe" to "Bellavista" but the site ID remains 24464
Other site values: No indigenous communities were identified
Delineation rationale: The KBA is located between two branches of the Marañon river, near the departmental limit of Amazonas and Cajamarca (the river borders the east limits of this KBA). On the south borders we find the city of Sambinera (crossing the river we find the KBA Bosque seco entre Bagua y Bagua grande), the populated center Santa Cruz and the district municipality of Bellavista; in the west we find the Cenfrocafe coffee processing plant and the airport of Jaen, and in the north we find the populated centers Mexico, Anchuma and the Minera Lucila - Tercorp Food.
