Site details

Site description: These two islands have a plateau-like form, and are bounded by cliffs reaching 70 m in height on Skomer. Salt spray and nutrient enrichment from seabirds affect the vegetation, which includes maritime grassland and Juncus flushes. The IBA is important for its breeding colonies of seabirds and waterbirds.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Delineation rationale: First identified in 1989; no significant boundary changes since then. SPA boundary used from JNCC; digitised at 1:10,000 scale.
