Site details


Site description: A large estuary draining the Rivers Cree and Bladnoch and several burns. The site includes extensive areas of intertidal mudflats and adjacent grazed saltmarshes and supports large numbers of wintering wildfowl and waders.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Delineation rationale: First identified in 1989; no significant boundary changes since then. Digitised onto 1:50,000 scale OS maps.
