Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: IBA Trigger species: Fairy Prion Black-fronted Tern and Black-billed Gull (both EN) are occasional visitors to this site. Besides the trigger species the following are confirmed or likely to be breeding or resident: Little Penguin, Fluttering Shearwater, Sooty Shearwater, Common Diving Petrel, Pied Shag, Spotted Shag, Reef Heron, Paradise Shelduck, Mallard, Australasian Harrier, Variable Oystercatcher, Southern Black-backed Gull, Red-billed Gull, White-fronted Tern, Shining Cuckoo, Morepork, NZ Kingfisher, Welcome Swallow, NZ Pipit, Grey Warbler, South Island Fantail, Silvereye, Skylark, Hedge Sparrow, Blackbird, Yellowhammer, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Redpoll, Yellowhammer, House Sparrow, Starling.
