Site details

Site description: Lies on the northern shore of Chongming Dao Island, with wide tidal flats created by sedimentation from the slow-flowing northern section of the Yangtze Estuary. The area is attractive to large flocks of ducks and shorebirds because it is remote and human disturbance is low. Construction of a dyke began in 2003 between the middle of the tidal flat and Xinglong Sha (also known as Huanggua Sha), and formed an artificial lagoon that is called Bei Hu (North Lake) by local people. This has led to increased sedimentation in Bei Hu and to the east of the dyke. When a new bridge connecting Qidong City in Jiangsu Province and Chongming Dao is completed in 2010, it is anticipated that human disturbance and development pressure will increase.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: Non-bird biodiversity: No information.
Delineation rationale: Boundary digitized by Gill Bunting at Birdlife International using Google Earth. Accuracy difficult to determine.
