Site details


Site description: A peninsula on the north-western coast of Saaremaa island, surrounded by a shallow (<20 m) sea with shallow (4 m) bays. There are many small lakes, forest, sand-dunes, coastal meadows and grasslands. The primary land-uses are fishing, and grazing of sheep and cattle.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: The area is important for several waterbird species, notably Polysticta stelleri.
