Site details

Site description: This is the largest wetland area in Luxembourg, and includes the Moselle valley and gravel-pits. The site was included within a larger IBA (formerly LU002) in the previous international IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The most important wetland in Luxembourg with records of over 230 bird species, including the only breeding site for Ixobrychus minutus. The site also holds breeding populations of Picus canus, Alcedo atthis and Lanius collurio, all listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive. The site is also of national importance for wintering birds including Botaurus stellaris, Mergus albellus and Falco peregrinus.
Delineation rationale: Delineation corresponds to the SPA 'Haff Réimech' (Gilles Biver, LNVL)
