Site details

Site description: The IBA covers the Odra river flood-plain between Mankovice and Ostrava. Habitats include Quercus and Ulmus riverine forest, alluvial meadows and oxbow lakes. Tributaries, drainage canals and millraces cut the landscape, and five fish-pond systems support reedbeds (Phragmites and Typha). Quercus/Carpinus or Tilia/Acer forest and arable land occur on the river terraces, with human settlements localized on the periphery. The fish-ponds are semi-intensively managed for fish-farming, and ducks are hunted during autumn.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: The site holds 22,000-25,000 waterbirds on a regular basis during spring passage and the breeding season, and supports a large Larus ridibundus breeding colony. Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (2-12 pairs).

Threats

Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: The establishment of a market zone and the construction of the Dunaj-Odra canal in the vicinity of the IBA represent serious future threats. Hunting is also a problem.
