Site details

Site description: A coastal site with intertidal mud- and sandflats, shoals, banks, islets and islands, saltmarshes, coastal heathlands and a few cultivated areas. Marine areas surrounding this IBA (and previously included within it, following Grimmett and Jones 1989) are now included in site 119.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The site is a very important staging area for Calidris alpina. It also holds several breeding species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive including Recurvirostra avosetta, Philomachus pugnax, Tringa glareola, Sterna hirundo, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons.
Delineation rationale: Type 1 marine IBA: suitable for the seaward extension approach.
