Site details

Site description: A long shallow fjord with islands and islets. Coastal areas have saltmarshes, agricultural land and forested peninsulas. The Fagus/Quercus forest on Bognæs includes areas of old-growth forest.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: This is a very important site for wintering Cygnus olor, Aythya fuligula, Mergus merganser and Fulica atra. Winter visitors can exceed 20,000 individuals, but numbers fluctuate widely in relation to winter harshness. Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna hirundo, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (max. 7, wintering).
